Foundations In Quiltmaking - Square -in-a-Square - w/ Maura Ambrose Of Folk Fibers

In April, we’ll explore one of quilting’s most classic, versatile, and beautifully simple patchwork forms: the Square-in-a-Square block. This foundational unit teaches accuracy through repetition and develops your eye for proportion, alignment, and confident corner-to-corner sewing.

Using an accessible stitch-and-trim method, you’ll learn how value, color placement, and construction order work together to create a block that looks crisp and intentional. With each round you add, your skills grow—this block is the perfect teacher for building precision without overwhelm.

What we’ll focus on

  • Square-in-a-Square construction using the stitch-and-trim method

  • Understanding and maintaining proportional borders

  • Accurate corner placement for balanced framing

  • Pressing techniques for clean angles and flat seams

  • Exploring design variations through color and value shifts

What you’ll make

You’ll complete one Square-in-a-Square block with multiple rounds, sewn step-by-step with guided support. This timeless unit can stand alone as a medallion, repeat into a larger quilt, or inspire endless variations. You’ll leave with the confidence to incorporate the Square-in-a-Square technique into future projects with ease.
