Charcoal Botanicals on Linen

In this relaxed, exploratory art session, we’ll create expressive botanical sketches using charcoal on raw linen—celebrating loose lines, organic shapes, and the beauty of imperfection.

We’ll begin with a short inspirational walk around The Loom Creative, observing seasonal leaves, branches, pods, and natural textures. You’ll curate photos of simple shapes and gestures from nature to bring back to the studio and use as inspiration.

Back inside, I’ll guide you step-by-step through creating your own charcoal botanical studies on artist-grade charcoal paper and frayed-edge linen. We’ll explore mark-making, shading, smudging, contrast, and composition using the different types of charcoal mediums—then take things further by adding subtle layers of paint washes to enhance depth and movement.

If drawing makes you nervous, don’t worry—I’ll provide a selection of beautiful botanical reference images you can use to trace, modify, or work from directly. You get to choose how adventurous you want to be

You will leave with several small studies, each with its own texture, softness, and story—perfect for framing, gifting, or incorporating into other mixed-media work.
